Poison The Well
Originally from Miami, Florida, Poison The Well emerged in the late 1990s from the local hardcore scene before shifting toward a melodic-tinged metalcore. Built around vocalist Jeffrey Moreira, guitarist Ryan Primack and drummer Chris Hornbrook, the band issued demos and EPs and then released in 1999 the album The Opposite of December… A Season of Separation, a key landmark of their early period on Trustkill Records. Poison The Well followed with Tear from the Red in 2002, which refined the balance between aggressive passages, screamed vocals and clearer melodies, and then signed to Atlantic Records for You Come Before You in 2003, marking an opening toward more varied structures and a sound less strictly hardcore. The second phase of their career, with Versions in 2007 and The Tropic Rot in 2009 on Ferret Music, saw the band incorporate elements closer to post-hardcore, alternative rock and more atmospheric textures while retaining a heavy rhythmic foundation and pronounced contrasts between tension and slower passages. Mostly active on North American and European hardcore and metal circuits, the band has alternated since 2010 between hiatuses and occasional returns to the stage, charting a trajectory of successive reappropriations of their own metalcore vocabulary.
