Ron Sexsmith
Born in St. Catharines, Ontario, in 1964, Ron Sexsmith belongs to the line of Canadian singer-songwriters who blend folk, pop and understated rock. Settling in Toronto in the late 1980s, he first made himself heard on the local scene with his band The Uncool before recording the cassette Grand Opera Lane in 1991. Noted for his melodic, intimate writing, Sexsmith released his eponymous debut album in 1995, produced by Mitchell Froom, which established a world of restrained ballads, spare arrangements and lyrics focused on relationships and everyday life. The records Other Songs (1997), Whereabouts (1999) and Blue Boy (2001), the latter co-produced by Steve Earle, confirmed this approach, situated between contemporary folk, melancholic pop and classic pop influences. Across albums such as Cobblestone Runway (2002), Retriever (2004) and Long Player Late Bloomer (2011), produced with Bob Rock, Sexsmith has maintained steady songwriting and touring, up to Hermitage (2020) and The Vivian Line (2023), which continue this aesthetic of concise, melodic songs.
