Pernett

Born in Barranquilla, Colombia, Humberto Pernett has since the early 2000s developed a body of work situated between the traditional music of the Colombian Caribbean coast and electronic production. A singer, producer and multi-instrumentalist, Pernett relies especially on the gaita, percussion and the rhythms from cumbia to build a universe where synthetic textures, repetitive motifs and a psychedelic approach to dance intersect. His career is part of the international circulation of electronic Latin American scenes, with music that links popular heritage, club culture and pop experimentation. Under the name Pernett, he has released several albums, including Muua in 2009, Carnavalera in 2012 and Caribesa in 2018, which show the evolution of a writing that moves from a fairly frontal fusion between folklore and machines to looser forms, mixing singing, electronic loops and Afro-Caribbean pulsations. Humberto Pernett has also developed a parallel facet under the name DJ WizKey, used for remixes and freer assemblages around tropical and electronic matter. Pernett's music thus remains tied to a contemporary reinterpretation of Colombian cumbia, conceived as much for listening as for movement.
