Ghetto Kumbé
In Bogotá, Ghetto Kumbé brings together three Colombian musicians who grew up on the Caribbean coast before coming together in the capital. Emerging during the 2010s, Ghetto Kumbé builds music at the junction of Afro-Colombian rhythms, Caribbean house and bass-centered electronics focused on repetition and dance. Percussion occupies a structuring role, with vocal lines and motifs drawn from the traditions of Colombia’s northern coast, in a dialogue that also points to the West African heritage present in these repertoires. Their aesthetic, often associated with an Afrofuturist sensibility, rests on a balance between club pulse and ritual memory, without reducing itself to a decorative fusion. Over their trajectory, Ghetto Kumbé has also worked with British producer The Busy Twist, whose input accompanied the project’s opening toward a distinctly more electronic mode of composition. The trio thus operates in a space where Afro-diasporic musics, Colombian Caribbean traditions and contemporary live-electronic formats intersect.
