Patrick Rondat
Born in Paris in 1960, Patrick Rondat made a significant impact on the French instrumental metal scene in the late 1980s with a highly technical guitar approach at the intersection of heavy metal, progressive rock and classical influences. Discovered through his early recordings, he released a series of studio albums focused largely on instrumental pieces: Just for Fun (1989), Rape of the Earth (1991), Amphibia (1996), On the Edge (1999) and An Ephemeral World (2004). His compositions emphasize clearly defined melodic themes, marked tempo changes and frequent use of motifs inspired by Baroque and Romantic music, all integrated into a contemporary metal sound. Alongside his solo career, Rondat maintained a long-term collaboration with Jean‑Michel Jarre—contributing to the album Chronologie (1993) and taking part in several major concerts and international tours—and joined European metal projects such as the Dutch band Elegy and the Consortium Project around singer Ian Parry, situating his playing within a more collective power/prog metal context. A regular presence at festivals, guitar events and masterclasses, Patrick Rondat has continued since the 2000s to pursue concerts, group projects and pedagogical work, remaining associated with a guitar approach that links melodic metal, virtuosity and a strong taste for thematic writing.
