Open Mike Eagle
Born in Chicago and based in Los Angeles, Open Mike Eagle has since the late 2000s developed a distinctive path in American independent hip‑hop, at the intersection of alternative rap, abstract hip‑hop and strongly narrative songwriting. Emerging from the Project Blowed scene, he initially took part in the trio Thirsty Fish with Dumbfoundead and Psychosiz, before building a solo career that began with Unapologetic Art Rap (2010) and Rappers Will Die of Natural Causes (2011). He then refined an aesthetic in which spoken word, dry humor, self‑deprecation and social observation blend with often minimalist, soul‑ or lo‑fi‑tinged productions, as on 4nml Hsptl (2012), Dark Comedy (2014) and Hella Personal Film Festival (2016), an album made with Paul White. With Brick Body Kids Still Daydream (2017) he revisited the history of Chicago’s Robert Taylor Homes in a more conceptual format. The continuation of his discography, from Anime, Trauma and Divorce (2020) to Component System with the Auto Reverse (2022) and Another Triumph of Ghetto Engineering (2023), extends an introspective, precise rap frequently informed by popular culture. In parallel, Open Mike Eagle has also led projects such as Cavanaugh with Serengeti and Previous Industries with Video Dave and Still Rift.
