OOIOO

Formed in Japan in 1995 around Yoshimi P-We, also active within Boredoms, OOIOO built itself on a logic of collective experimentation where rock mingles with noise, psychedelia, post-punk and rhythmic structures often close to trance. The group, conceived as a female and mobile ensemble, first took shape with musicians who were not all from the same instrumental background, which contributed to its instinctive approach and a sound marked by shifts, repetitions and improvisation. After a first concert in 1997 opening for Sonic Youth in Japan, OOIOO released ∞8∞ the same year, then Feather Float in 1999, Gold & Green in 2000, Kila Kila Kila in 2003, Taiga in 2006 and Armonico Hewa in 2009. Across these records, OOIOO develops music difficult to confine to a single register, made of angular guitars, shouted or melodic vocals, very present percussion, and influences that can evoke funk as well as no wave, certain repetitive musics as well as motifs inspired by non-Western traditions. The group’s tours in the United States and Europe, as well as its presence on stages such as All Tomorrow’s Parties, accompanied this singular trajectory.
