Matthew Mole
Born in Cape Town, South Africa, Matthew Mole emerged in the early 2010s as a singer-songwriter blending folk, pop and light electronic influences. After releasing early demos online, he put out the EPs You Did Well, Kid (2011) and Same Parts, Same Heart (2012), which placed him on the South African indie map. His debut album The Home We Built (2013) established an aesthetic built on acoustic guitar, repetitive rhythmic motifs and direct melodies. Run (2016) pushed his songwriting further toward pop and more produced textures, and Ghost (2019) emphasized the mix of organic instrumentation and electronic elements. Matthew Mole’s songs address personal relationships, faith and everyday life in an introspective but accessible tone, with attention to vocal arrangements and shifts in dynamics. On stage he often appears alone, constructing tracks layer by layer to recreate a band sound, and he performs in venues and festivals across South Africa as well as on tours in the UK and Europe, where his folk-pop is associated with a new generation of South African songwriters.
