Nancy Ajram
A central figure in mainstream Arab pop, Nancy Ajram has, since the late 1990s, developed a repertoire that blends Lebanese song, Egyptian variété/pop, and dance influences, driven by straightforward melodies and often romantic themes. Born in Beirut in 1983, she first drew attention as a child in televised competitions in Lebanon before releasing her debut album, “Mihtagalak,” in 1998, followed by “Sheel Oyounak Anni” in 2001. Her career took on a regional dimension with “Ya Salam” (2003) and “Ah W Noss” (2004), whose music videos—several directed by Nadine Labaki—came to dominate Middle Eastern music channels. Firmly established, Ajram went on to release a steady stream of records, from “Ya Tabtab...Wa Dallaa” (2006) and the children’s album “Shakhbat Shakhabit” (2007) to “Betfakkar Fi Eih” (2008) and “7” (2010), alternating songs in various Arabic dialects with more classic ballads. With “Super Nancy” (2012), “Nancy 8” (2014), and “Hassa Beek” (2017), she continued to pursue an accessible pop aesthetic centered on vocals and choruses, while consolidating a regular presence on major stages and television shows across the Arab world, where she also appears as a judge on talent competitions.
