Murray Head
Born in London in 1946, Murray Head embarked early on a dual career as a singer and actor, moving between recording studios, film sets, and the stage. He came to prominence in the late 1960s in rock musical theater, before portraying Judas on the 1970 concept album Jesus Christ Superstar—a decisive collaboration with Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber that firmly positioned him at the crossroads of pop rock and musical theater. In parallel, he built a singer-songwriter career with albums such as Nigel Lived (1973), Say It Ain’t So (1975), and Between Us (1979), blending narrative songwriting, folk influences, melodic pop rock, and more intimate ballads. On screen, Murray Head notably appeared in John Schlesinger’s Sunday Bloody Sunday in 1971, while his musical activity continued into the 1980s with the score for Chess, written with Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson, which yielded the 1984 hit One Night in Bangkok. Partly based in France, Murray Head has maintained close ties with the Francophone scene, alternating recordings in English and French and pursuing a concert career centered on a repertoire where pop, rock, musical theater, and chanson intersect.
