Luka Bloom
Born Barry Moore in Newbridge, County Kildare, Ireland, Luka Bloom belongs to the Irish folk tradition while developing a songwriter’s craft aimed at the international stage. The younger brother of singer Christy Moore, he began in the 1970s under his birth name before adopting the alias Luka Bloom in the late 1980s and refocusing his work on a very direct guitar-and-voice format. Luka Bloom’s repertoire blends contemporary folk, acoustic song and pop influences, with lyrics often rooted in everyday life, social issues and travel. From Riverside (1990) and The Acoustic Motorbike (1992), and with albums such as Turf (1994), Salty Heaven (1998) and Keeper of the Flame (2000), he built a discography in which original compositions and reworked covers coexist, driven by rhythmic guitar playing and a foregrounded voice. Luka Bloom performs mainly solo on the circuit of intimate venues and folk festivals across Europe, Australia and North America, favoring a stripped-back aesthetic centered on stage presence and audience exchange. Subsequent releases, from Innocence (2005) to Frugalisto (2016), including Eleven Songs (2008) and This New Morning (2012), continue this trajectory of intimate ballads, travel chronicles and socially engaged songs, confirming Luka Bloom’s distinctive place in contemporary Irish folk.
