Arrested Development
Formed in Atlanta in 1988 around rapper and producer Speech and DJ Headliner, Arrested Development made its mark in the early 1990s with an alternative hip‑hop sound rooted in afrocentrism, soul and funk, and lyrics focused on social, spiritual and political issues—countering the then‑dominant gangsta rap. The group’s first era, which also featured notable figures such as Baba Oje and Dionne Farris, took shape with the 1992 album 3 Years, 5 Months and 2 Days in the Life Of..., driven by tracks like "Tennessee", "People Everyday" and "Mr. Wendal". In 1993 Arrested Development became the first hip‑hop act to win the Grammy Award for Best New Artist, and they also won Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group for "Tennessee". After Zingalamaduni in 1994, the group split in 1996 and resumed activity from 2000 onward, following a more independent path led by Speech. Since then Arrested Development has continued to tour and release albums, including Among the Trees (2004), Since the Last Time (2006), Strong (2010), Standing at the Crossroads (2012), This Was Never Home and Changing the Narrative (2016), Craft & Optics (2018), Don’t Fight Your Demons (2020) and For the FKN Love (2021). The current lineup centers on Speech, One Love, JJ Boogie and Fareedah Aleem.
