Kastelruther Spatzen

Born in the alpine village of Kastelruth in Italy’s South Tyrol, the group Kastelruther Spatzen has been part of the German‑language volkstümliche Musik tradition since the late 1970s. Made up of musicians from the local German‑speaking minority and built around the voice of Norbert Rier, Kastelruther Spatzen has developed a repertoire that blends schlager, Alpine folk and slow ballads, supported by male choirs, simple melodies and arrangements in which guitars, brass and accordion play a central role. Initially active at village festivals and regional dances, the band gradually moved into regular studio work from the 1980s onward and recorded for audiences in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and South Tyrol. Their lyrics repeatedly address mountain landscapes, rural life, family and religion in an accessible, narrative register. Long a fixture on television programs devoted to popular music and on the major stages of volkstümliche Musik, Kastelruther Spatzen also organize the annual Kastelruther Spatzenfest in their home village, an event that has become central to their artistic trajectory and to their relationship with their audience.
