Liturgy

Formed in Brooklyn in the mid-2000s around Haela Hunt-Hendrix, Liturgy began as a solo project before becoming a full band in 2008. The group is rooted in experimental black metal that they have described as "transcendental black metal," blending a repetitive approach inherited from the New York scene with very dense guitars, burst-like rhythms and, at different times, elements of progressive rock, hip-hop and electronic music. After the EP Immortal Life in 2007 (issued on vinyl in 2008), Liturgy released Renihilation in 2009 and Aesthethica in 2011, two records that established their initial sonic identity. With The Ark Work (2015) Liturgy shifted its writing toward more open and discontinuous forms, a trajectory continued on H.A.Q.Q. (2019), Origin of the Alimonies (2020) and 93696 (2023). The band's work also crosses into performance and contemporary music, notably the opera Origin of the Alimonies presented with a chamber ensemble. Over the years the lineup has changed several times, while remaining centered on Haela Hunt-Hendrix's compositions and artistic direction.
