Kaizers Orchestra
Around singer‑guitarist Janove Ottesen, Kaizers Orchestra took shape in the late 1990s in Bryne in southwest Norway and established itself in the early 2000s as an alternative rock band singing in Norwegian. The sextet developed a mix of electric rock, rhythms reminiscent of Balkan brass bands and dark cabaret atmospheres, driven by narrative songs populated with mafia families, soldiers and marginal figures. The first album, Ompa til du dør (2001), set out the main contours of this aesthetic, continued by Evig pint (2003) and Maestro (2005) with more orchestrated arrangements. With Maskineri (2008) and the compilation of re‑recorded tracks Våre demoner (2009), Kaizers Orchestra broadened its palette toward a more direct rock while retaining a taste for repetitive motifs and chanted choruses. Between 2011 and 2012 the Violeta Violeta trilogy developed a kind of rock opera around a conceptual story and occupies a special place in the band’s discography. After a farewell tour and a hiatus in 2013, the members pursued various projects before announcing a reunion in the early 2020s and resuming live activity.
