Lio
Born in Mangualde, Portugal in 1962 and raised in Brussels, Lio entered the francophone pop wave at the end of the 1970s. Her repertoire, seemingly light, is nonetheless marked by new wave influences and synthetic sounds. Backed by productions from Marc Moulin and Dan Lacksman, she made her mark with early singles “Le Banana Split” and “Amoureux solitaires,” which set the tone for an urban, rhythmic and highly melodic pop. Her debut album, “Lio” (1980), cemented this blend of French chanson, bubblegum pop and electro-pop aesthetics; “Amour toujours” (1983) and “Pop model” (1986) continued that line with a bolder sound, nourished by her work with lyricist Jacques Duvall and her closeness to the French pop scene of the 1980s. Alongside her singing career, Lio has maintained a regular acting presence in film and television and served as a judge on music shows, sustaining her media profile. The 1990s and 2000s saw her explore a more mature songwriting approach: she worked notably with Étienne Daho on “Des fleurs pour un caméléon” (1991) and alternated studio projects with more intimate formats. Based between France and Belgium, Lio returned in 2018 with “Lio canta Caymmi,” a Portuguese-language album devoted to the repertoire of Dorival Caymmi, highlighting her Lusophone heritage and a direction closer to bossa and acoustic song, while extending a career where francophone pop, popular culture and cinematic references coexist.
