Joep Beving
Born in 1976 in Doetinchem, the Netherlands, and based in Amsterdam, Joep Beving has developed a body of work as a composer and pianist at the intersection of neoclassical music, minimalism and ambient elements. After studying public administration and spending several years in advertising, he turned to writing for solo piano and recorded at home slow pieces focused on repeating motifs, simple harmonies and a very muted, intimate touch. Self-released in 2015, the album Solipsism gradually attracted an international audience, followed by Prehension in 2017, Henosis in 2019 and Hermetism in 2022, released after he joined the Deutsche Grammophon roster. His compositions, frequently used in film and on screen, adhere to a contemplative aesthetic in which melody remains central, with special attention to silence and the piano’s resonance. On stage he performs solo recitals or in collaboration with the ensemble Echo Collective, cellist and composer Maarten Vos and occasionally the Cappella Amsterdam choir, in formats that extend his studio work and sometimes incorporate lighting designs created with artists Nick Verstand and Boris Acket.
