Joseph Arthur
Born in Akron, Ohio, in 1971, Joseph Arthur began carving out a career as a songwriter in the 1990s that blends folk, indie rock and more experimental approaches. Discovered by Peter Gabriel, he joined the Real World label and released Big City Secrets in 1997, his debut album showcasing a mix of acoustic guitars, looping motifs and introspective lyrics. Critical recognition grew with Come to Where I’m From (2000) and Redemption’s Son (2002), which established him on an alternative scene balancing melancholic ballads and more electric tracks. After a period based in New York, he followed several studio projects—from Our Shadows Will Remain (2004) to Nuclear Daydream (2006)—before founding his own label, Lonely Astronaut, to pursue greater artistic independence; releases include The Graduation Ceremony (2011), The Ballad of Boogie Christ (2013) and The Family (2016). At the same time he has collaborated widely—through the trio Fistful of Mercy with Ben Harper and Dhani Harrison, the band RNDM with Jeff Ament, and the duo Arthur Buck with Peter Buck—extending a universe where folk rock intersects with more psychedelic songwriting. Also a painter, he often incorporates visual performance into his shows and has maintained a steady recording and touring schedule through the 2010s and 2020s, notably with the album Come Back World released in 2019.
