John Acquaviva

Born in Orsara di Puglia, Italy, in 1963, John Acquaviva established himself from the late 1980s between Canada and Detroit, in the wake of the emergence of North American techno. A DJ, producer and entrepreneur, John Acquaviva developed a language situated between techno, house and tech house, with a direct club approach, dry grooves and a strong emphasis on rhythmic efficiency. His career remains closely linked to Richie Hawtin, with whom he founded Plus 8 Records in 1989, a label central to the early years of Detroit and Windsor techno. In 1993, John Acquaviva also co-founded Definitive Recordings, a structure more oriented toward house and tech house, which he would later relaunch. His discography extends over several decades, between personal productions, remixes and collaborative projects, notably with Olivier Giacomotto, Lutzenkirchen or Alex D’Elia. A long-time presence on the international circuit, John Acquaviva has also participated in major evolutions in the electronic music economy, by getting involved early in digital distribution and in the development of Beatport. This dual activity as a DJ and a label initiator sheds light on the continuity of his career, anchored in club culture and the transformations of the electronic scene since the 1990s.
