Ivan Smagghe
Born in 1969 in France and based in Paris, Ivan Smagghe established himself on the electronic scene in the 1990s, first through the Rough Trade record shop and then in Parisian clubs, where he shaped a distinctive approach to the dance floor blending house, minimal techno, electro and the legacy of new wave. With Arnaud Rebotini, he co-founded the Black Strobe project in the late 1990s, combining electronic textures, rock influences and echoes of cold wave, before continuing under his own name with work more focused on DJing, production and remixing. Smagghe later developed several long-term collaborations, notably the duo It’s A Fine Line with Tim Paris and the Smagghe & Cross project with Rupert Cross, which extend his interest in slow hybridizations, dark atmospheres and sonic montages at the border between club music and more experimental aesthetics. Also active as a curator and label director with Les Disques de la Mort, Ivan Smagghe regularly appears on European stages, from intimate clubs to institutions devoted to electronic music, while maintaining a constant link to the marginal currents of dance culture.
