Faster Pussycat
Born on the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles in 1985, Faster Pussycat initially belonged to the late-1980s American hard rock scene, blending glam metal, glam punk and gritty blues rock, driven by Taime Downe’s raspy voice. The band was formed around Downe with Brent Muscat, Greg Steele and Kelly Nickels, gaining attention on the Hollywood club circuit before signing with Elektra. They released Faster Pussycat in 1987 and Wake Me When It’s Over in 1989, where the songwriting became more melodic while retaining the sleaze rock aesthetic of their early work. Whipped! followed in 1992 with a heavier, darker approach, at a time when the American hard rock landscape was changing rapidly. The band split in 1993 but reformed in 2001 under Taime Downe’s leadership; he has been the only constant member through numerous lineup changes. This second period introduced more industrial elements, heard notably on The Power and the Glory Hole (2006), while maintaining the group’s hard rock core. Faster Pussycat has continued to tour regularly, playing rock festivals, mid-sized venues and nostalgia circuits tied to the 1980s American hard scene.
