Evil Nine

Formed in Brighton in the late 1990s, Evil Nine brings together Tom Beaufoy and Pat Pardy around a breakbeat and big beat foundation that quickly opened to other strands of electronic music. The duo emerged on Adam Freeland's Marine Parade label with the early maxis 'Less Stress', 'Technology' and 'Cakehole', then refined a writing that blends broken rhythms, thick basslines, club tension and borrowings from hip-hop as well as rock. Evil Nine released its first album, You Can Be Special Too, in 2004, with guests such as Aesop Rock and Juice Aleem, before following with two notable mixes for the Y4K series in 2005 and FabricLive in 2006, which reflect the eclecticism of their selections. In 2008, They Live! extended this approach with a more upfront production and collaborations including EL-P. In the following years, Evil Nine continued activity between singles, remixes and EPs, notably The Power EP in 2009, then releases on their own label For Lovers, such as Broken Dreams EP in 2012 and New Girl EP in 2014. Present as much in clubs as in festivals, Evil Nine sits within a British electronic scene where breakbeat dialogues with electro, the DJ formats and a culture of cross-genre mixing.
