Eric Roberson

Born in Rahway, New Jersey, Eric Roberson has carved out a distinctive path in American R&B since the mid-1990s, navigating neo-soul, indie soul and a songwriting tradition rooted in gospel, hip-hop and contemporary soul. After his first single, “The Moon,” released in 1994 on Warner, Roberson continued his career outside mainstream channels and framed much of his output around his own label, Blue Erro Soul. Trained in musical theater at Howard University, he initially worked as a writer and collaborator for other artists—among them Jill Scott, Musiq Soulchild, Vivian Green and DJ Jazzy Jeff—and was associated with the Philadelphia scene and the collective A Touch of Jazz. As a solo artist, Eric Roberson released The Esoteric Movement in 2001, then followed with several projects that established a writing focused on relationships, conversation and intimacy, including Music Fan First (2009), Mister Nice Guy (2011), The Box (2014), Hear From Here (2020) and Lessons (2022). His music relies on a supple voice, understated grooves and an independent approach that also informs his collaborations, notably Tigallerro with Phonte in 2016.
