Engelbert Humperdinck

Born in Madras in British India in 1936 as Arnold George Dorsey, Engelbert Humperdinck grew up in Leicester, England, where he began singing in the 1950s under the name Gerry Dorsey before adopting his current stage name in the mid-1960s at the suggestion of his manager Gordon Mills. Engelbert Humperdinck made his mark in orchestral pop, international variety and easy listening, with a supple baritone voice and a repertoire focused on romantic ballads, standards and melodic writing rooted in the music-hall and adult contemporary traditions. His breakthrough came in 1967 with “Release Me”, soon followed by songs such as “The Last Waltz” and “A Man Without Love”, which firmly established him on television, casino and cabaret stages in the UK, the United States and Las Vegas. Among his verified albums are Release Me (1967) and A Man Without Love (1968). Over the decades he maintained a steady career of touring, recordings and television appearances, up to the 2010s, notably representing the United Kingdom at Eurovision 2012.
