Guitar Wolf
Formed in Tokyo in the late 1980s, Guitar Wolf established themselves as a Japanese trio of garage punk and abrasive rock’n’roll, built around singer‑guitarist Seiji, originally accompanied by Bass Wolf (and later bass successors) and Drum Wolf on drums. The band coins the term “jet rock’n’roll” to describe a heavily saturated, often lo‑fi sound where rockabilly roots, punk energy, rapid riffs and a chanted, near‑shouted vocal meet a constantly taut tempo. Noticed in Tokyo’s independent club circuit, the group broke internationally in the mid‑1990s with releases on American labels—most notably Missile Me! (1995), Planet of the Wolves (1997) and Jet Generation (1999)—which placed them on underground stages in Europe and the United States. Guitar Wolf continued this trajectory in the 2000s with Rock’n’Roll Etiquette (2000) and UFO Romantics (2003), while maintaining extensive tours in mid‑sized venues and at alternative festivals. Their appearance in the 1999 Japanese film Wild Zero reinforced the band’s image at the intersection of punk culture, B‑movie imagery and recurring references to classic rock, motorcycles and science fiction. Releases in the 2010s, such as Love & Jett (2019), confirm the persistence of this raw approach, centered on a direct power‑trio format and a radical garage aesthetic.
