Grimskunk

Formed in Montreal in 1988 from the hardcore band Fatal Illness, GrimSkunk is part of the history of Quebec’s alternative scene with a blend of punk rock, hardcore, psychedelic rock, progressive rock, reggae, ska, and touches of world music that the band has often summarized with the expression "world punk." GrimSkunk sings in several languages, notably French and English, and early on developed a repertoire where punk energy coexists with dub passages, sharper guitars and sometimes more ambitious constructions. After the demo Autumn Flowers in 1991 and the EP Exotic Blend in 1992, the band released Grim Skunk in 1994, followed by Meltdown in 1995 and Fieldtrip in 1998, albums that accompanied its durable foothold on Quebec and Canada’s rock scenes. Over the years GrimSkunk has undergone several lineup changes, notably the departure of bassist Marc-Boris St-Maurice in 1999, then the arrival of Vincent Peake, also associated with Groovy Aardvark. In 1997, the members founded Montreal-based label Indica Records, initially to release their own material after Cargo Records' collapse, before turning it into an active entity in the independent scene. The discography continued with Seventh Wave in 2002, Fires Under the Road in 2006, Set Fire! in 2012 and Unreason in the Age of Madness in 2018, in a continuity defined by cross-pollination of styles, a DIY ethos, and a regular live presence in Canada and internationally.
