Vulgaires Machins

Anchored in the francophone punk rock wave that swept through Quebec in the 1990s, Vulgaires Machins formed in Granby around singer-guitarist Guillaume Beauregard and guitarist-singer Marie-Ève Roy, later joined by a rhythm section with a rotating lineup. The band forged a melodic brand of punk rock with French-language lyrics, where social critique, political concerns, and more intimate observations intersect, delivered with a direct sound often tinged with alternative rock. Vulgaires Machins first made its name on Quebec’s small independent stages before establishing a lasting foothold in the network of punk venues and festivals across the French-speaking world. Their discography charts key phases of that evolution, notably Compter les corps (2006), with an overtly activist bent; Requiem pour les sourds (2010), which pushes further the contrasts between catchy melodies and darker subject matter; and Disruption (2022), recorded after a period of lower-profile activity. Over the years, Vulgaires Machins has toured extensively in Canada and francophone Europe, frequently sharing bills with other punk acts and occasionally offering more stripped-down versions of its repertoire, while remaining grounded in the punk roots and collective songwriting that define the group.
