Ed Harcourt
Born in Wimbledon, southwest London, Ed Harcourt has developed since the early 2000s a songwriting voice that sits between chamber pop, indie pop and folk rock, with a marked taste for piano-led melodies, string arrangements and atmospheres that are often dark without being overwrought. After a stint in the band Snug in the 1990s, Harcourt launched his solo career with the EP Maplewood in 2000 and released his debut album Here Be Monsters in 2001, which established his world and earned a Mercury Prize nomination. His subsequent discography — from From Every Sphere (2003) and Strangers (2004) to The Beautiful Lie (2006), Lustre (2010), Back into the Woods (2013), Furnaces (2016), Beyond the End (2018), Monochrome to Colour (2020) and El Magnifico (2024) — demonstrates a steady evolution between orchestral ballads, chamber pop, mellow rock and more stripped-back formats. Alongside his records, Harcourt works as a writer, composer and producer for other artists, notably Sophie Ellis-Bextor and Paloma Faith, composes for image and film, and has appeared on stage with Marianne Faithfull, Patti Smith and The Libertines. For Ed Harcourt, voice, piano and a strongly narrative approach to songwriting remain at the core of music that is classical in form yet open to contemporary textures.
