Djavan

Born in 1949 in Maceió, in the Brazilian state of Alagoas, Djavan Caetano Viana gradually established himself on the música popular brasileira (MPB) scene by blending samba, jazz, soul, and pop. After starting out in local bands, Djavan moved to Rio de Janeiro in the early 1970s, sang in clubs, and drew attention at televised festivals, where his compositions were picked up by other performers. The album A Voz, o Violão, a Música de Djavan, released in 1976, laid the foundations of his songwriting, marked by rich harmonies, a flexible rhythmic approach, and highly melodic phrasing in Portuguese. Over the 1980s, records like Luz (1982) and Lilás (1984) led to collaborations with jazz and funk musicians and expanded his audience beyond Brazil, while keeping him at the core of urban MPB. In the 1990s, Djavan recorded Puzzle of Hearts (1994), conceived for a more international context, followed by Malásia (1996), which returned to a more intimate aesthetic. A much sought-after singer-songwriter, Djavan has seen many of his songs covered by other artists and included on film and Brazilian telenovela soundtracks, while his repertoire continues to explore a mix of ballads, sambas, and compositions with structures that are sometimes complex yet accessible.
