Lulu Santos
Born in Rio de Janeiro in 1953, Lulu Santos emerged at the turn of the 1980s as a leading songwriter, singer, and guitarist in Brazilian pop. After a stint with the progressive rock outfit Vímana in the mid-1970s, he launched a solo career that took shape with the 1982 album Tempos Modernos, which introduced a blend of pop rock, funk, and Brazilian music. The records O Ritmo do Momento (1983) and Tudo Azul (1984) confirmed this approach to songwriting, built on direct melodies, prominent guitars, and a taste for the synthetic arrangements then emerging in Brazil. Over the years, Lulu Santos broadened his scope toward more electronic pop while remaining rooted in MPB, as evidenced by Assim Caminha a Humanidade (1994), and he has occasionally collaborated with musicians from the country’s rock and pop scenes. His lyrics often address relationships, urban life, and social change in accessible language. Still active on stage, Lulu Santos alternates touring, studio sessions, and television appearances, maintaining a continuous presence in Brazil’s musical landscape.
