Fumiya Tanaka

Born in Fukuchiyama, Kyoto Prefecture, Fumiya Tanaka first developed an interest in punk before turning to club culture in the early 1990s, when he began DJing in Osaka. A Japanese DJ and producer based in Berlin since 2011, Tanaka is associated with a sober, tense and minimalist brand of techno built on rhythmic detail, repetition and a tightly controlled progression. He founded the label Torema Records in 1993 and continued his discographic work with Sundance and op.disc, while also releasing on European outlets such as Tresor. His career is divided between DJing, production and several parallel projects, notably HOODRUM with Akio Yamamoto, as well as the aliases Karafuto and Individual Orchestra, which he uses for freer formats. Milestones in his discography include I am not a DJ (1995), Unknown Possibilities Vol.1 (1997), Unknown Possibilities Vol.2 (2000), Unknown 3 (2008) and You Find The Key (2016). Long established on both Japanese and European techno scenes, Fumiya Tanaka has developed ties to the Berlin minimal aesthetic while maintaining a highly personal approach to mixing and long-form performance.
