Dieter Bohlen

Born in 1954 in Berne, Lower Saxony, Germany, Dieter Bohlen established himself in the early 1980s as a songwriter and producer in German-language pop. After beginning his career as a songwriter at a publishing house, he formed the duo Modern Talking with Thomas Anders in 1983; the pair developed a highly melodic eurodisco and synthpop sound that combined pop choruses, electronic arrangements and schlager influences. The duo split in 1987 and later reunited from the late 1990s to the early 2000s. At the same time Bohlen led his own project, Blue System, active from the late 1980s to the late 1990s, where he honed a European pop aesthetic marked by choirs, drum machines and a range from ballads to more dance-oriented tracks. In the studio he wrote and produced numerous songs for other pop and schlager artists, continuing a producer’s approach centered on simple, effective song structures. From the 2000s onward he also became a recurring figure on German music television—notably as a jury member on talent shows—while occasionally continuing work as a composer, publisher and solo artist under his own name.
