Deep Dish

Formed in the early 1990s in Washington, D.C., Deep Dish brought together Ali Shirazinia, aka Dubfire, and Sharam Tayebi — two Iranian-American artists who first made their mark in house circles with remixes oriented toward progressive house, deep house and tech house, favoring long structures, gradual buildups and reworked vocals. Deep Dish rose to wide prominence with their 1995 remix of De’Lacy’s “Hideaway,” then went on to rework tracks for artists such as Everything but the Girl, Madonna, Dido and Depeche Mode, while developing a steady presence on international club stages. Their debut album, Junk Science (1998), established the basis for a sound that was at once fluid, nocturnal and melodic, later extended by George Is On (2005), which includes “Flashdance” and “Say Hello.” In 2002 the duo received a Grammy Award for their remix of Dido’s “Thank You.” Deep Dish’s trajectory also includes several notable DJ mixes, among them Renaissance Ibiza (2000), Global Underground: Moscow (2001) and Global Underground: Toronto (2003), before a split in 2006 that opened the door to solo careers for Dubfire and Sharam. The name Deep Dish resurfaced in 2014 with the single “Quincy” and a few duo reunions onstage.
