Epica

Formed in 2002 in Reuver, the Netherlands, around guitarist and composer Mark Jansen after his departure from After Forever, Epica established itself in the field of symphonic metal by combining death elements and gothic influences. Initially active under the name Sahara Dust, the band soon adopted the name Epica and found its identity with the arrival of mezzo‑soprano Simone Simons, keyboardist Coen Janssen and, later, musicians Isaac Delahaye, Rob van der Loo and Ariën van Weesenbeek. The release of The Phantom Agony in 2003 placed Epica on a stage where orchestras, choirs, operatic vocals and growls merge with structures close to progressive metal. Consign to Oblivion (2005) and The Divine Conspiracy (2007) extended this conceptual approach, often centered on philosophy, religion or science, while Design Your Universe (2009) and Requiem for the Indifferent (2012) broadened the rhythmic scope and the complexity of the arrangements. With The Quantum Enigma (2014), The Holographic Principle (2016) and Omega (2021), Epica deepened a style in which dense orchestrations, acoustic passages and electronic touches coexist, supported by sustained live activity in international metal venues and festivals.
