Emel Mathlouthi
Born in Tunis in 1982, Emel Mathlouthi grew up between Arabic song, Western folk and indie rock before turning to a politically engaged writing that led to clashes with censorship in Tunisia and prompted her move to France in the mid-2000s. Initially based in Paris and later dividing her time between Europe and the United States, she has developed a sound in which modern Arabic poetry is woven into electronic textures, folk guitars and rhythms reminiscent of trip hop. Her debut album, Kelmti Horra (2012), pairs intimate ballads with protest songs, and its title track was widely sung during the Tunisian revolution. She followed with Ensen in 2017, which deepened her electronic and vocal experimentation, and Ensenity in 2018, a more stripped-down, atmospheric reinterpretation of that material. She has performed at concerts and festivals across Europe, the Maghreb and North America, moving between world-music stages, independent circuits and more institutional settings, notably at the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony in 2015. Alternating between Arabic, English and sometimes French, Mathlouthi cultivates a broad vocal style often supported by minimalist arrangements in which percussion, synth pads and strings serve lyrics of strong political and intimate resonance.
