Cirque du Soleil
Founded in Baie‑Saint‑Paul in 1984 by Guy Laliberté and Gilles Ste‑Croix and later developed out of Montréal, Cirque du Soleil grew from the street collective Les Échassiers into a benchmark of contemporary circus without animals, where acrobatics, visual theatre and music take center stage. The company’s aesthetic relies on themed productions driven by characters, meticulously crafted scenography and original soundtracks that mix orchestral pop, percussion, electronic textures, world influences and vocals in multiple real or imagined languages. After early tours in Québec and across Canada, a new phase began with Nouvelle Expérience in 1990 and with Las Vegas residency shows such as Mystère (1993), O (1998) and Kà (2004). Cirque du Soleil has also developed collaborations with The Beatles for Love (2006), with Michael Jackson for Michael Jackson: One (2013), and with Disney for Drawn to Life (2021). On the discography side, albums tied to the shows — including Alegría (1994), Quidam (1997) and O (1998) — extend Cirque du Soleil’s sonic identity, sitting between theatrical music, narration and immersive atmospheres.
