Tania Giannouli

Based in Greece, Tania Giannouli has since Athens developed a career at the crossroads of contemporary jazz, improvised music and ensemble writing, with an approach shaped by her classical training as a pianist and composer. Her work places a central emphasis on improvisation, in forms that blend lyricism, tension, silences and movements between Mediterranean traditions, chamber music and more open textures. Tania Giannouli has released several records on the New Zealand label Rattle, including Forest Stories (2012) with Paulo Chagas, Transcendence (2015) with the Tania Giannouli Ensemble, Rewa (2018) with Rob Thorne, In Fading Light (2020) alongside Andreas Polyzogopoulos and Kyriakos Tapakis, then Solo (2023), her first album on solo piano. Her projects have taken her to stages and festivals across Europe, the United Kingdom and the United States, in contexts spanning jazz as well as multidisciplinary. Tania Giannouli also composes for cinema, documentary and other visual forms, while some of her concert works have been performed by different ensembles. Over the years, she has also developed duo or small-format collaborations with musicians such as Nik Bärtsch, Arve Henriksen, Nils Petter Molvær or Maria Pia De Vito, confirming an open practice where writing, collective listening and sonic exploration move forward together.
