Spoons

Formed in Burlington, Ontario, Spoons is part of the Canadian new wave scene of the early 1980s with a sound that blends synth-pop, nervy guitars, and pop melodies with sometimes post-progressive edges. Around Gordon Deppe and Sandy Horne, the durable core of the band since 1979, Spoons moves from more progressive influences to a writing that is more concise and danceable, marked by the rise of keyboards. After the first album Stick Figure Neighbourhood in 1981, recorded with Daniel Lanois at the mixing desk, the group quickly broadened its audience with Arias & Symphonies in 1982, then Talkback in 1983, produced by Nile Rodgers. On stage, Spoons then opened for several international groups and established itself in the Canadian rock and new wave circuit. The period 1982-1985 remains linked to titles such as Nova Heart, Old Emotions, Tell No Lies and Romantic Traffic, where the group combines cold rhythms, catchy choruses, and a more direct pop sensibility. After a move toward rock on Bridges Over Borders in 1986, Spoons partially returned to its electronic roots with Vertigo Tango in 1988. The band then experienced several pauses and reformations, before resuming recording activity with Static in Transmission in 2011 and then New Day New World in 2019. Spoons continues today to perform with Gordon Deppe and Sandy Horne at the heart of the project.
