Dorian Pimpernel

Active since the mid-2000s, Dorian Pimpernel brings together five musicians in France around a conception of psychedelic pop that draws as much on 1960s harmonies as on the detours of progressive rock, film music and a kind of experimental songcraft. The band first made an impression with Hollandia, released in 2006 on the Japanese label Rallye, then pursued a more underground path within the French independent scene, far from a mere retro exercise. They construct carefully written pieces rooted in melody but threaded with oblique arrangements, discreet electronic textures and a marked taste for unsettled atmospheres. This aesthetic, which Dorian Pimpernel has sometimes linked to the idea of “moonshine pop,” darkens sunshine pop without sacrificing the clarity of the songs. The group’s trajectory also intersects with cinema and French independent pop: some members have worked in the orbit of Serge Bozon, Axelle Ropert or Barbara Carlotti. For Dorian Pimpernel, formal precision matters as much as drifting, with music that moves between song, psychedelia and art pop.
