Jean‐Yves D’Angelo
Born in Algiers in 1959, Jean-Yves D’Angelo has established himself in France as a pianist, arranger, orchestrator and composer, with a career spanning chanson, jazz, instrumental music and film music. Trained very early in piano and then at the École normale de musique de Paris and at the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique de Paris, Jean-Yves D’Angelo began working in the late 1970s as a studio and live musician for many performers of French chanson, before expanding his activity to musical direction for television and live performances. In the 1980s, he participated in the group Préface alongside Manu Katché and Kamil Rustam, in a register where jazz, fusion and pop writing intersect. Under his name appeared notably Jonasz en noires et blanches in 1994, Tee Blues in 1995, Blues Time in 1999 and Piano Voix in 2006, records centered on a supple, melodic piano playing closely tied to blues as well as chanson. From the late 1980s, D’Angelo develops in parallel regular work for cinema and television, signing the music for films by Fabien Onteniente, Frédéric Auburtin, Denys Granier-Deferre or Claude D’Anna. His name is also associated with Michel Jonasz, whom he has accompanied for a long time, notably in a piano-voix format that emphasizes a sober, precise and listening-based approach.
