Charlie Sexton

Born in San Antonio and raised in Austin, Texas, Charlie Sexton developed early on within the local circuit, moving between blues, rock and the city’s clubs, directly influenced by W.C. Clark, who also taught his brother Will Sexton. As a teenager he attracted attention with an initial repertoire marked by 1980s rock and a new wave aesthetic, documented on Pictures for Pleasure (1985) and Charlie Sexton (1989). He later shifted toward a more organic blues-rock, rooted in Texas roots music, songwriting and a guitar style firmly anchored in the American tradition. In 1992 Sexton co-founded Arc Angels with Doyle Bramhall II, Tommy Shannon and Chris Layton, before forming the Charlie Sexton Sextet and releasing Under the Wishing Tree in 1995. At the same time he developed a steady career as a studio musician and producer, working with artists such as Jimmie Vaughan, Edie Brickell and Los Super Seven. Sexton then joined Bob Dylan’s band from 1999 to 2002 and returned in 2013, an important collaboration in his trajectory as a guitarist. His solo discography also includes Cruel and Gentle Things (2005) and The South Side Sessions, recorded with Shannon McNally in 2006.
