Syndrome 81

From Brest, Syndrome 81 crafts a tense, melodic punk that blends the legacy of the second wave of punk with the roughness of American hardcore and colder post-punk shades. Active since the mid-2010s, Syndrome 81 made a name for itself on the French punk scene with short, dark, and direct songs, driven by lyrics rooted in everyday life in Brest, geographic isolation, social boredom and a kind of urban spleen. The band draws as much from French punk as from British and American scenes, without merely juxtaposing references: at Syndrome 81, stripped-down rhythms, sombre melodies and the bluntness of the choruses cohere in compact songwriting. With Béton Nostalgie in 2017, the band more clearly defined this identity, between punk urgency, post-punk coolness and realistic storytelling. In concert the group moves between punk, Oi! and post-punk bills, delivering a physical stage presence that extends the tension of their recordings without upsetting its balance.
