Ak'chamel

Under the name Ak’chamel, or Ak’chamel, The Giver of Illness, a collective based in Austin, Texas operates at the intersection of experimental psychedelia, ritual folk, drone and lo-fi rock. Their approach blends repetitive percussion, incantatory vocals, noisy soundscapes and motifs drawn as much from trance music as from the language of psych garage. Active since the early 2010s, Ak’chamel initially circulated in underground networks with a series of cassettes, later issuing vinyl editions and video objects, building a fragmented discography that extends the group’s raw, hallucinatory aesthetic. On stage, Ak’chamel also develops a visual dimension through costumes, masks and spatial staging that brings the concert close to a ritual performance while remaining within the framework of experimental rock. This hybrid identity has placed Ak’chamel in independent circuits where noise, psych-folk, art rock and improvised music intersect, in the United States as well as in Europe, with a project that remains fluid in form but consistent in its sonic universe.
