Noise Dept.
Behind Noise Dept is Raj Jain, who develops an electronic project born in north Los Angeles and nourished by a life split between the United States and India, where he spent part of his childhood immersed in percussion and polyrhythms. Trained as a guitarist, he initially operated within the orbit of American indie pop — notably touring with Suki Waterhouse — before refocusing his practice on computer‑composed writing that is more minimal, rhythmic and experimental. Noise Dept thus moves in a flexible zone between ambient, downtempo, UK garage and electronic forms that are hard to pin down, with a marked taste for repetitive motifs, spaces left for silence and introspective atmospheres. Raj Jain’s multicultural heritage — between African‑American reference points, dance culture and an indie rock listening background — is reflected in music that favors restraint, motion and narrative through rhythm rather than the accumulation of effects. Under the name Noise Dept he combines a discreet club pulse, diffuse melodies and almost cinematic soundscapes without confining himself to a single format.
