DJ Hype

Active from the late 1980s within London’s sound systems and pirate radio, DJ Hype, born Kevin Ford, established himself during the transition between rave, breakbeat hardcore and the early jungle movements in the UK. Emerging from club and radio culture, he developed a style built on massive basslines, rapid breakbeats and a pronounced use of scratching, anchoring him both in drum and bass and in a hip‑hop/sound‑system tradition. In the mid‑1990s he founded the label Ganja Records and became involved with the True Playaz collective, initiatives that supported the spread of a dancefloor‑oriented jungle and drum and bass often described as jump‑up. Alongside his production work, DJ Hype maintained an active DJ career — residencies in London clubs, Ganja and Playaz nights and international tours — while remaining linked to the major European drum and bass scenes. His releases mix original tracks and mixed selections that reflect his direct way of constructing a set, focused on rhythmic efficiency, abrupt tempo changes and constant attention to the crowd’s energy.
