Sargeant X Comrade

Sargeant X Comrade is a Calgary-based project led by Canadian singer Yolanda Sargeant and producer of Russian origin Evgeniy "Comrade" Bykovets. From Calgary they have been developing an aesthetic they describe as lo-fi soul — at the crossroads of soul, hip hop, jazz, funk, dancehall, electronic music and nu-jazz. Unable to find a label that fit this blend, Sargeant X Comrade adopted the term to denote a sound in which Yolanda Sargeant's voice remains central, supported by productions with gritty textures and often mid-tempo dynamics. The duo attracted attention with the album Magic Radio in 2020, long-listed for the 2021 Polaris Music Prize, and followed with The Elephant in the Room in 2021, while establishing themselves in the Canadian soul and hip hop scene through studio and live collaborations. Winners of several Western Canadian Music Awards and YYC prizes in soul and R&B categories, Sargeant X Comrade continued their sonic explorations during a residency at the National Music Centre, from which the third album Lo‑Fi Future emerged in 2023, and through Arts Commons' TD Incubator program, which enabled them to develop a transdisciplinary project around the same theme. In parallel, Yolanda Sargeant was listed on the Women In Canadian Music Honours Roll 2023 for her contribution to the Canadian music landscape. Sargeant X Comrade are preparing a fourth album titled Power, announced for summer 2025.
