Frank the Baptist
Led by singer‑songwriter Frank Vollmann, Frank the Baptist was born in the late 1990s within San Diego’s alternative scene in the United States, before relocating to Berlin where the band has since been based. Rooted in melodic goth rock and drawing from post‑punk, alternative rock and folk touches, Frank the Baptist crafts solid guitar‑driven songs featuring a deep voice up front, restrained rhythms and dark yet structured atmospheres, inheriting elements from both cold wave and American indie rock. The 2003 album Different Degrees of Empty laid the project’s foundations, followed in 2004 by The New Colossus which strengthened Frank the Baptist’s presence on the European dark circuit, and by The Black Wing and Prayer in 2007, noted for more expansive arrangements. After a quieter period the band returned in 2015 with As the Camp Burns, continuing to focus on songwriting that is at once direct and atmospheric. Between the United States and Germany, Frank the Baptist sits within a continuity of goth rock and death rock while retaining an identity closely tied to Frank Vollmann’s songwriting.
