Davina and The Vagabonds
Based in the Twin Cities, Minnesota, Davina and The Vagabonds formed in 2004 around pianist and singer Davina Sowers, originally from Altoona, Pennsylvania. The band crafts a sound rooted in the blues and jazz of the early 20th century, incorporating elements of roots music, Americana, R&B, soul and gospel, driven by a prominent piano, a smoothly phrased voice and a brass and rhythm section that gives the whole a vintage yet direct colour. Davina and The Vagabonds began on the Minneapolis local scene with a repertoire of covers and originals, before recording Songs from Thomas Avenue in 2006 and Under Lock and Key in 2008. Their discography expanded with Live @ The Times (2009), Black Cloud (2011), Sunshine (2014), the live Nicollet and Tenth (2016), Sugar Drops (2019), A Lovenest Holiday (2022) and Shoot for the Moon (2024). Around Davina Sowers, the band notably relies on Becca Lozier on trumpet and Connor McRae Hammergren on drums, sometimes supplemented by double bass and trombone. For several years they have been performing on club and festival stages across the United States, the United Kingdom and Europe.
