Junior Brother
Born in County Kerry, Junior Brother has, since the late 2010s, been developing a songwriting approach that shifts the codes of Irish folk toward a more jagged, spoken and often oblique format. Driven by a taut voice, an often-nervous acoustic guitar and carefully crafted lyrics, he blends traditional balladry, contemporary storytelling and rougher textures that situate him as much within the folk scene as in indie and alternative circles. His debut album Pull the Right Rope (2019) established the foundations of this world, followed by The Great Irish Famine (2021), a broader record that confirms Junior Brother’s move toward a modern, dark and highly literary strain of folk while remaining rooted in his Irish ties. Present on independent stages across Ireland and the UK, he has gradually expanded his audience beyond the strict folk circuit. A new phase opens with The End, announced on Strap Originals — the label launched by Pete Doherty — which escorts Junior Brother’s trajectory toward an even more open framework while staying true to his distinctive way of letting tradition, rhythmic tension and narrative converse.
