Cake
Formed in the early 1990s in Sacramento, California, the band Cake developed a minimalist-leaning strain of alternative rock, drawing on country, funk, indie pop, and touches of brass-band flair. Centered around singer-guitarist John McCrea—whose talk-like phrasing strongly shapes Cake’s aesthetic—the recurring presence of Vince DiFiore’s trumpet, prominent bass lines, and acoustic guitars establishes an immediately recognizable sound, often built on repetitive motifs and crisp, clipped rhythms. The band drew attention in the mid-1990s with Motorcade of Generosity (1994), followed by Fashion Nugget (1996), which featured covers alongside originals with ironic lyrics, moving between everyday vignettes and skewed commentary on popular culture. Cake continued with Prolonging the Magic (1998), Comfort Eagle (2001), Pressure Chief (2004), and Showroom of Compassion (2011), consolidating a trajectory focused on club stages, touring in North America and Europe, and a commitment to concise, often mid-tempo songwriting that leaves little room for showy virtuosity in favor of simple structures and a dry, understated humor.
